DYBERRY CREEK
The
Dyberry is a meandering creek that runs through
Wayne
County and offers an abundance of
scenic beauty. Animal life, classic country farms, a town set in
Norman Rockwell’s time, and age old forests line the route and
ensure a ride that will be very hard to forget.
The
most convenient way to begin your day is to start in downtown
Honesdale. Locate Northeast Sports, Ltd. on
8th street
(behind the CVS Drug Store) and follow 191 North (Church Street) until you pedal out of
the downtown. Once you cross the bridge
Main Street becomes a residential section
of town. Continue on 191 North past beautifully maintained Victorian
homes dating back to the early 1800’s. This is definitely a snapshot
of classic small town
America . The
Yellow track traverses out of Honesdale and towards the Wayne county
Fairgrounds. Once you have climbed the hill (this is a large,
challenging hill for moderate to advanced riders) just north of the
fairgrounds – be sure to stop and take a gander off of the Jadwin
Dry Dam for some great photo ops. Once the photos have been taken
start down the hill and take your first left turn, (whatever goes up
MUST come down) you will soon come upon the start of the Blue Track.
The Blue Track begins at the entrance to The Dyberry Creek Road.
This would be a great place to start the ride if you were in the
mood for a shorter less challenging ride. To make things even
easier, there is a parking lot at the entrance to the road where you
can unload your bike and gear. This is the premier location to start
if you are planning an entire family adventure. There are many
places to stop and picnic, take pictures with the family, or sneak
away for some quiet fly-fishing.
Further adventure is ensured if you take a turn off the Blue Track
(by making a left) and heading down the Black Track. This will lead
you to
Tanners
Falls . A great piece of scenery
located back in the woods. Tanners falls was the power source for an
old tannery that called the area home in the 1800’s.
Heading back onto the Blue Track will lead you Lower Woods Pond –
another great place to stop and play. Lower Woods is a completely
secluded and primitive pond. No buildings of any sort are permitted
near the pond. This is back country scenery at its best! This is a
great place to stop and have a bite to eat or to turn around and
head back if you are tuckered out or have members of the group that
would prefer not to get involved in a lengthy ride – or to just stay
on the flats.
Your next decision would be whether or not to hop onto the Red
track. The Red Track offers a slightly more challenging ride through
the valleys of northern Wayne County. This ride provides views of
country living at its best. This is some of the areas most beautiful
countryside – but it is definitely more challenging than the flats
of the Blue Track. The Red Track will take you through the small
town of Equinunk. Here you will experience a general store, a
renovated barn - now a restaurant for a great meal. Also, while in
town be sure to stop in at the local museum or the antiques shop to
pick up some local history.
All
of the rides are designed to be out-and-back trips. Just keep in
mind that you have as much distance on the way back as you had on
the way out. If you have any questions about the tracks or the
terrain or ANYTHING – feel free to call Northeast Sports, Ltd. @
(570) 253-1145.
